In 2006 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) ranked the U.S. 21th in relation to 57 other participating countries in science literacy. Apparently the scores tell us that the U.S. is way behind the Czech Republic, Croatia, EU nations and Japan. A similar story is to be found in the 2003 PISA report, where the U.S. again performed dismally in relation to other participating countries, falling right behind countries like Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The report found that American students were generally poor at applying what they’ve learned from their math curriculum. It also discovered that there exists…

whenever i visit the Mexican futbol section and I see lame American fans hyping up the sub par U.S. team. Can’t you Americans read? Hello!!! This is the Mexican futbol section! No America is not number 1 in everything. Look at the following stats: 44th in healthcare, 42nd in infant mortality rate, 48th in overall health, and as mentioned above 49th in literacy. Do you realize that we still have 12 year olds who still can’t spell the name of the teacher they’re screwing!!! What do my Mexican friends think of these illiterate Americans going on the Mexican futbol section?

The president doesn’t run the free world by sitting in front of a computer, of course, but does a total lack of computer literacy indicate that a candidate is “out of touch” with the digital era/technology-related issues?

White Knight, don’t patronize me. I will eat you alive.
Bob, the CEO damn well better know everything about heavy machinery excluding how to operate them. Your analogy is about as strong as a wet paper sack.
Thor, do you even know what [sic] means? What was spelled incorrectly?
apple, those basic tasks are exactly what I refer to when I say “total lack of computer literacy.”…

I just asked a question about whether people would favor a constitutional amendment imposing a literacy test as a precondition to voting and no fewer than 4 people answered that a literacy test is unconstitutional. I’ve never seen a better argument for charter schools.

For example, I just saw a statistic that India only had a 53% literacy rate or something like that. It’s just one example, but do we (or why don’t we) send people over there to try to guide reform and teach education practices?
Sorry about the bias there, but what has the U.S. done and are these efforts predominately civilian or government? What are we currently doing with HIV in Africa, the crisis in Darfur, poor literacy, malnutrition, those kinds of things?
Less war and overthrowing of communist and oppressive governments, more reform in measurable and non-oppressive ways! Thanks for your…
