Just because you might not enjoy classic literature or works of contemporary fiction doesn’t mean that you aren’t qualified to help your child improve her literacy skills.
Nor should you feel guilty if flipping through the pages of the daily newspaper, or a sports magazine is the only real reading you do on a daily basis.
Some of us, particularly if we spend our working lives reading documents and papers, would rather relax with more pleasurable reading material like magazines and articles. The thought of slogging through a Booker Prize winning work after a long day in the office really doesn’t appeal.
Similarly,…

I’ve read many answers here where parents have claimed to spank their children to keep them out of jail, when ironically the majority of people in prison were spanked as children. They often cite that spanking will help prevent their kids from being drop-outs, getting pregnant as a teenager and doing drugs, but the states where the drop-out, teen pregnancy, and crime rates are amongst the highest are the ones in the South like Louisiana and Arkansas where corporal punishment is more common. In comparison, countries like Sweden where spanking is illegal have very low crime rates, and a very…

It’s not the sole responsibility of the church to teach bible it’s the individual responsibility to know the scriptures. Most of Christian denominations accuse that Catholics do not read bible. Catholics do read the Bible, and are encouraged by the Church to do so. First of all, Catholics read the Bible every day at the church, at home with their families. Catholic Mass (service) is conducted by reading the several passages from the Bible. Catholics protected the Bible over the centuries of wars, famines, plaques, the fall of Rome, fires, and threats from all sides. This was long before any…

My boyfriend speaks Spanish as his first language and English as a second. He has a very wide vocabulary range in English and speaks it very well, but he struggles in the reading and writing department quite a bit. I would like to help him to improve his skills, but I am a terrible teacher and don’t even know where to start. Any suggestions on different methods that might work?

Business organisations say the school leavers they recruit have such poor reading, writing, social and communication skills that they have to undergo basic literacy training before they can be useful employees. I wondered what teenagers thought of this: is there really a great deal of illiteracy and why, and what can be done about it? Those of who who are good with reading and writing, what enabled you to acquire those skills when others didn’t?
oops, showed my own illiteracy by putting ‘who who’ instead of ‘you who’ in the last sentence. It won’t let me change it now!
