One of the first and most important things to remember when teaching phonics is that children need to know what sound each letter makes within a word. Learning only the sound makes it extremely easy to learn to blend letter sounds together to read words. Phonics sounds also help in identifying the sounds in words to write them.

I have a child who knows letter sounds but does not seem hear those sounds in a word (mainly beginning sounds since that is what we are focusing on). For example, I can ask her to point to or write a /m/, /s/, /t/, /r/, /long e/ or /short a/ and she is successful 98% of the time. But on the other hand, she can not match a picture to the sound…even when I emphasize the beginning sound. For example, moon, /mmmm/ “Hear that sound?” /mmmm/oon. And she’ll put it under e. Or /aaaa/ /aaa/nt ant. And she’ll put it…
