Hey there!
A friend of mine is turning 14 in a month or so.
This year, I wanted to get her something unique.
There’s this website where if you buy something, the profit goes to preserving rainforest, help feed the hungry, help children attain literacy, and take care of animals across the world.
I don’t care what’s cheapest, I just want what would be the best for her.
Soooo…. let us start with the options!
1. It’s simple, and she loves cats. http://shop.therainforestsite.com/store/item.do?siteId=221&itemId=31809&link=Store_TRS_Cart_Item
2. She likes the color combo of red, white and black, and she likes pearls:

I, alas, am a product of American society. I am limited, and I am stupid. By the standards of the average American, I am politically, culturally, and geographically literate. That is untrue. My geographical knowledge is spot-on for the US, and pretty good in Europe, Canada, the Middle East and Asia.
I can’t stand the state of politics and any American news is juvenile, sensationalized crap. I haven’t watched the news in a long, long time. I do read the NY Times, but I get bogged down because I lack even the most basic perspective of the last few years. I…

Last week I went shopping in our small rural hometown, where my family has attended the same public schools since 1896. Without exception, all six generations of us — whether farmers, housewives, day laborers, business people, writers, lawyers, or educators — were given a good, competitive K-12 education.
But after a haircut, I noticed that the 20-something cashier could not count out change. The next day, at the electronic outlet store, another young clerk could not read — much less explain — the basic English of the buyer’s warranty. At the food market, I listened as a young couple argued over…

by Philip Yaffe
Anyone who has travelled outside his own country is aware of the thrill—and frustration—of dealing with foreign languages.
The thrill comes from the fact that the languages are foreign. When you hear people speaking differently from you, and see newspapers, magazines, posters and other written materials that look different from what you are used to, you know you have actually gone somewhere.
The frustration also comes from the fact that the languages are foreign. If you really need to say something to someone who doesn’t understand you, or need to read something you don’t understand, frustration is inevitable.
The…
