The reason for reading is to relate what you happen to be reading with what you already know. In this sense, if you do not know anything about what you are reading, it is like trying to grab a handful of air… a wasted effort.
Take these digits, for example:
3285784, is difficult to read and retain.
328-5784, is easier to read and retain because of the separation.
363-0246, is easy to grasp due to prior information and organization.
Equally, if you are into investing, reading an investment article is easy for you to comprehend, because in your mind you have a background for reading,…

Developing confidence is an important part of learning a language. I am a firm believer that mistakes are an important part of any learning cycle. As Henry Ford famously said: “I don’t make mistakes, I learn too much from them”. In the case of English as second language these wise words have so much truth attached to them. In many instances, I have seen capable non-native English speakers become withdrawn and shy when it comes to speaking with native English speakers.
With regards to increasing confidence, a major obstacle…

We often see articles in newspapers or magazines about the shocking extent of poverty in America or some other English-speaking nation. But how often do the articles examine the cause of the poverty? I cannot remember ever seeing such an article. Many persons of influence — celebrities, educators, and politicians — bemoan the extent of poverty. Many of them want to help. Some of them actually do help, but the help is almost always something involving providing money or physical items to temporarily relieve the symptoms — the pain and suffering brought on by poverty. It is almost never something…

Many foreign friends of mine are complaining to me that Chinese is so hard to learn: the ridiculously difficult writing system, the confusing four tones, the extensive system of measure words, so a lot of things to memorize… It seems that I should thank God just for being born Chinese. Is Chinese really that hard to learn as a foreign language?
Actually, I don’t think so. Chinese grammar is much simpler if compared to that of the European languages. English speakers sometimes complain that languages like Spanish have a complicated grammar (masculine and feminine genders, verb conjugations, etc), whereas the…

Teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in China is big business. Reports indicate that EFL is a 10-billion yuan (USD $1.4 billion) business and that the industry made a 700 million yuan (USD $9,800,000) profit in Beijing alone. It is estimated that of the 37 billion yuan derived annually from book sales in China, EFL-related materials constituted no less than 25 percent of the total market (Qiang and Wolff, 2004, p. 1). This ever-growing market of English language education in China has resulted in a massive recruitment drive of approximately 100,000 foreign teachers per year (People’s Daily Online, 2006)…
