Even at America’s founding, America had a higher literacy rate than any European country, largely because in 9 of the 13 colonies, it was law that parents teach their children to read the bible and catechism. Understanding the bible was essential in early America to keeping a democracy, separate from Europe’s kings. In Europe, illiteracy was necessary to keep the Feudal system in tact.
