Look at a small child who turns on a video on TV in a language that they’ve never heard before. What do they do? They listen; they don’t try to speak. Their eyes open wide and they listen intently. Im teaching inner city 8th grade literacy and the students dont even listen to me. Help!?

I am at a summer enrichment camp. I am trained in elementary education. This summer I was hired to teach literacy to 1st-4th grade everyday. That is fine. Then they added 5th-8th grade literacy on as well. So now I teach 1st-8th grade everyday. All of the other classes are great except for 7th/8th.

Today they would not participate, they are not interested in anything other than talking to each other. If you want a good example of what the class environment feels like, think of Dangerous Minds.

On top of it all, I also have 2 children with severe special needs.
