1. This article discusses the benefits of using bilingual books in the classroom where English is taught as a second language. The article also discusses the importance of literacy and illiteracy; and illustrates how to use bilingual books to foster the development of literacy for those learning a second language. This article states that literacy is associated with educational success and achievement. It is part of the cultural capital valued by our society and achievement in it serves as a primary gatekeeper for entry into educational institutions, the workforce, and leadership positions (Gutierrez, 1992).
