How have these supposed good intentions lead to the absolute downfall of this system? My thought is that these intentions couldn’t have been so very pure if we are where we are today. Literacy was way higher in colonial America where homeschooling was generally the manner of teaching. Your opinion and insight are much appreciated.

Hello! So tomorrow is my first day of tutoring through the America Reads program, and we’re supposed to just spend the day getting to know each other (we have half an hour with each kid).
Anyway, the reason I’m having a hard time is as of right now I don’t know the literacy level of these kids. They are first graders but “behind” (hence why we’re tutoring them), so they could be able to write or they could not even be able to recognize letters.

From there, it focuses on reading aloud, playing with words, and designing writing centers, book nooks, dramatic play areas, and other aspects of instruction. Loaded with photographs, student work, and straight talk about kids and learning, Literacy and the Youngest Learner…
