Our philanthropy is literacy, mostly with children, but we wanted to reach out and do something with the elderly in the nursing home. It doesn’t have to involve reading, but we would like it to. I know that we might could set apart an hour to read small books to the patients who have bad eyes, like one on one, but what is an activity that we can do together as a group? I’ll take any ideas, literacy related or not.

I’m taking some classes in the school library and I am supposed to be promoting information literacy, or reading for pleasure. Does anybody have some good ideas of interesting activities to do in the school library for k-6 students?

I’m trying to get some ideas to teach money to 2nd graders with LD and ADHD. I am starting the unit by teaching them how to identify coins and their values. Also, I want them to be able to make combinations and count sets of coins up to $1.00 for now.

I have play money (and manipulatives) to use. I have a lot of practice worksheets and I found an idea for a money game. These money concepts will also be coordinated with daily calendar activities.

Anything else I can do to help improve student understanding in this area? Any good…

I’m just starting out as a teacher having just finished uni. I’m going to be relief / substitute teaching for the rest of the year (I’m hoping to work full time starting in January) and I think I really should have some games and activities in my bag of tricks in case I get in a jam. I know some classroom teachers can leave really good notes for subs, but others can leave you with a lot of extra time to fill.
I’ll be teaching up to grade 6.
