Tips for reading?

Has anyone out there got any tips for helping my 10 year-old stepson become a better reader? He has some serious literacy obstacles to overcome due to a lack of quality education & home life up to this point (my husband and I just took custody of him 4 months ago).I'm considering Hooked On Phonics, anyone used it? Any other tips/tricks that helped your kiddos out??I am just going to have to let this one go to the voting. You guys gave me such GREAT advice and while I can see now that I am doing the right thing by spending time with him every day, I can also see where I am lacking in my approach to that and will do my best to change it!Thank you to everyone who took the time to answer, there's no way I could choose a best - yours were all great!!!
