Getting educational services for a child? Posted on: Thu, 12 Jun 2008 16:49:16 -0500
I have been working with an 11 year old girl repeating the 4th grade. She performs in the low average range on a measure of !Q (84) andd various measures of achievement (reading, math, language, etc.). She gets C's in school. She is currently receiving some special education services in school and is being seen once a week for an hour for literacy. There is some concern that she will not receive services next year because she does not meet the criteria for a learning disability or a language impairment. Therapy this past term has focused primarily on spelling, but she has made little progress. She continues to make many phonetic-based errors and doesn't seem to recognize properly spelled words. Questions:1. What would you recommend for this child?2. Do you think she should continue receiving services in school?3. If so, how could I help the parent make sure she gets these services?4. What is the best case prognosis for this child?
