Are the questions posted by many kids/ teens on this board an indication of a failing public educati Posted on: Thu, 12 Jun 2008 00:01:16 -0500
I understand that there is this whole new internet/ text message language. I am 24 and many of my well educated friends in the same age group type in this sort of shorthand when they are in a rush; however, many of the questions posted on YAHOO! answers are written in a matter that is completely incoherent. I hope that this inability to form sentences or convey a thought is just an indication of laziness, but I worry that these teens and young adults are really incapable of reading or writing at a level that indicates reasonable intellegence and literacy. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is the public school system failing the children of America? Are parents not pushing their children hard enough to learn? Is this unintellegable way of communicating just a stupid trend? What reasons can we attribute to our youth's failure to read or write at an age appropriate level?I should add that I consider myself to be fairly well educated and well spoken although I have not finished college. I do not intend to suggest that a formal education is necessary in order to be both of those things. Also, while I agree that language evolves, the simple rules of grammer are relatively unchanged from previous generations. Having studied shakespeare as a theatre student, I can see your point regarding the evolution of english, but if you look at the basic grammer it is not that different. I can understand words being added to a language or changing as the language evolves; however, not being able to write a sentence in a way that makes any grammatical sense is a far cry from the evolotion of thou to you.
