I don’t want to start a fight I’m just looking for opinions. The five states with the lowest literacy rates are, in order as of 1998, Mississippi, Lousiana, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina. All of these states are also located in the “Bible Belt”. Do you think there is a correlation or is it unfortunate coincidence?

Even at America’s founding, America had a higher literacy rate than any European country, largely because in 9 of the 13 colonies, it was law that parents teach their children to read the bible and catechism. Understanding the bible was essential in early America to keeping a democracy, separate from Europe’s kings. In Europe, illiteracy was necessary to keep the Feudal system in tact.
