Can an analysis of the “religious characteristics” of a culture be predictive in any way of whether the culture was able (or will be able) to independently (i.e. without outside help from an already-literate society) develop its own written-language system?
(Related to that question: Can anyone cite a link to text or maps which indicate the cultures which are believed to have developed their own writing system(s) without outside instruction? What kinds of cultures are likely to develop their own written language system?)
[Yes, some will no doubt post the story of Sequoyah, who is a rare case in modern times of…

I’ve been teaching for 11 years.I have a master’s degree in bilingual education and heritage languages, literacy and leadership.I’ve received extensive training to provide the best possible instruction to my English learners.I always teach the beginning ELs and am very proud of their achievements and state test scores.I’ve received only praise from former principals. Our new principal acts like only he knows the correct methods of teaching. After an informal observation of a reading fluency/comprehension lesson,he called me into his office to say it was unprepared(??),a waste of instructional minutes and should only take 5 minutes, not 20.Students do buddy reading while I listen…

In 2006 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) ranked the U.S. 21th in relation to 57 other participating countries in science literacy. Apparently the scores tell us that the U.S. is way behind the Czech Republic, Croatia, EU nations and Japan. A similar story is to be found in the 2003 PISA report, where the U.S. again performed dismally in relation to other participating countries, falling right behind countries like Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The report found that American students were generally poor at applying what they’ve learned from their math curriculum. It also discovered that there exists…

I’m going to be tutoring a student about 4 hours a week this summer. He is a special ed student (LD) going to be in 8th grade and we will work on everything literacy (phonics/ word attack skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, test taking skills, etc). Reading is his deficient area and the parent’s goal is for him to make dramatic progress so that he can be mainstreamed into a regular class. The child reads on probably a 4th grade level.
What can I do to maximize the results with such little time? I agreed to work with him but any…

I have a research article that I am supposed to critique. I’m supposed to determine which strategies should be implemented to integrate literacy instruction across the curriculum. I’m not sure how to critically analyze a research journal article. It is an article written by Arlene L. Barry which is based on a survey given to her former students. Most of the students at the time were teaching in different content areas. This survey was used to find out the effectiveness of learning strategies taught in her course entitled “Teaching Reading in the content Area”, a mandatory course for middle and…
