“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently”

-Henry Ford-

I am a firm believer that failure is an important part of any learning cycle. In the case of English as a Second Language, many capable non-native English speakers become withdrawn, shy and even scared when faced with the prospect of having to converse with non-native English speakers. This is simply because many language learners are afraid to dare. They worry constantly about not meeting expectations, making a mistake, or failing while trying something new. In that vein, were they to adhere to Ford’s advice and take the plunge; (dare to make mistakes, and learn from them,) non-native speakers would benefit greatly from the learning process.

Henry Ford’s quote runs counter to cultural assumptions we have about failures and mistakes; namely that they are shameful things. We are taught in schools, in our families, or at work to feel guilty about failure and to do whatever we can to avoid mistakes. This sense of shame, combined with the inevitability of setbacks when attempting difficult things, explains why many people give up on their goals: they are not prepared for the mistakes and failures they will face on their way to what they want. What’s missing in many people’s beliefs about success is the fact that the more challenging the goals, the more frequent and difficult setbacks will be.

For many reasons admitting mistakes is difficult. An implied value in many cultures is that our work represents us: should you fail a test, then you are perceived as a failure. Should you make a mistake then you are labeled as unusual. We are taught not to appear weak or to look bad in the eyes of others. Thomas Edison, on the other hand, would have never invented the light bulb if he did not take the principle of daring to heart. He failed more than 10,000 times before he found the filament that would create light for a sustained period of time. Edison did not view his attempts as failures. However, he saw every situation as an opportunity to learn, refine and narrow his search which brought him closer and to his goal. In his own: “I failed my way to success”.

In the same light as Edison, it is important to embrace the principles of failure in an English language learning context. Similarly, it is important to take linguistic risks, and it is equally as important to be systematic while trying to analyze what went wrong. This is the dynamic learner. In the tradition of this process you may find it tiresome at first because you may not know where to begin. Even if you do not recognize the cause or causes of your mistakes, truly devoted and diligent English learners are not afraid to pay their dues: to soldier on in the face of setbacks. Pragmatic-English learners are likely to fail, learn from their lessons and only then be able to come through as winners.

Such motivated learners try to reach a healthy state of mind through developing a good sense of humor. It might take a while, but eventually you will see some comedy in what happens. When you can laugh at your own mistakes you know you have made a leap forward in the learning process. Accepting mistakes as an inseparable part of the learning process is one of the most valuable pieces of English advice a teacher can give to a non-native- English speaker. The best way to gain confidence is to simply talk to other smart, capable and well-meaning people who have made similar mistakes to the one you have made. This will put learning in a realistic context and remind yourself that you are going through a process. With English language learning, there is rarely obvious immediate gratification. Instead you are aiming for deferred gratification and a lengthier learning curve for longevity: life-long learning.

A persistent learner should also engage in self-deprecating antics; be a touch foolish; make errors which will bring forth laughter from your friends or colleagues. Moreover, the benefits of humor in education have been accessed in recent research and have been proven to enhance performances; simply because it puts the learner at ease. Having slightly embarrassing moments and laughing about your language oversights always makes a great story, (in English of course.) It is important to note, that the dedicated learners always expose themselves to the world of critics. Unfortunately, the world is full of critics who play no ball, nor fight no fights. They make no mistakes because they generally attempt nothing. The person who makes no mistakes may lack boldness and the spirit for a learning adventure. This type of person puts the brakes on the wheel of progress. Theodore Roosvelt, former President of the United States, passionately pointed out in Paris, in 1924:

“It is not the critic who counts… who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, …who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at best, knows…the triumph of high achievement, and who, at worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly.”

Bill Bryson noted that English is full of booby traps for the unwary foreigner. If there is one thing certain about this language, it is clouded with uncertainty. No other language in the entire world has more contradictions in its grammar, pronunciation and spelling than English. In order for a non-native speaker to become a competent user of English, you must be prepared to become a resolute learner. Daring to learn will only advance your learning. To sum up the premise of my article from a familiar old adage: “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again”.

Whether you wish your child to learn English, French, or Spanish, just remember one simple fact. The more interesting and exciting you make French or Spanish or English lesson plans, the easier it would be for your kid to learn the new language and its rules. By using informal, yet useful ways of teaching language skills, you can help your child learn to speak, read, and write quickly and easily in that particular language.

For instance, if you want to teach English to your child, use phonics games and fun phonics for kids. Phonics games are very helpful in teaching phonics…

Phonics games are very helpful in teaching phonics sounds or the sounds of English letters and alphabets. Kids learn to identify English words and the various sounds they make. There are a plethora of phonics games, such as phonics picture games, phonics painting games, phonics story games, phonics writing games, and so on to choose from. You may also use phonics puzzles and phonics quizzes to teach phonics to your kid.

Other fun phonics for kids includes songs and stories. Phonics songs are basically English alphabet songs. Kids listen to the English alphabet and learn the sounds that each letter of the alphabet makes. Phonics stories include small, interesting stories in English.

By using phonics games and fun phonics for kids, you can help your child feel relaxed and comfortable. He/she would not feel the pressure that traditional formal teaching methods put on young learners. Further, by engaging yourself in the phonics games; reading out phonics stories; or singing phonics songs to your kids, you would further enhance the learning process. Your child would learn to read and speak English in no time.

If you want to know how much your kid has learnt so far, you may use phonics worksheets. The phonics worksheets include exercises, such as matching the phonics sounds with the correct letters, or identifying the odd word from a group of identical sounding words. Fill in the blanks, completing the dotted line between the letters and the correct words are some other exercises included in the phonics worksheets.

Phonics games, fun phonics for kids, and phonics worksheets are equally useful for teaching Spanish and French to children. So, if you are wondering where you can get phonics games or fun phonics for kids to teach English or French or Spanish, just log on to www.lcfphonics.com. The website offers a wide range of phonics games for teaching English, French, and Spanish to kids at home or in school.

I’ll show you the four ways to sell it.

If you are new to manual selling, I’ll show you which of the
four ways is the best for you. That said, I hope you will read
what follows very carefully and very thoroughly.

There are no catches. I have nothing more to sell to you (unless
you want to read some of the other manuals which I have written).

I hope the information which follows can be of real benefit to
you.

That is why I have written it!

Exactly what is a manual?

A manual can be called a booklet, a pamphlet, a report, a
newsletter, a guide, an instruction manual, a plan, a
manuscript, etc.

A manual is simply an easy-to-understand report which shows the
reader “How To” do something that he does not already know.

Most manuals show the reader … How to start or expand a hobby;
How to develop new abilities or qualities; How to start a new
business or expand an old one; How to prepare for a new career;
How to make or save money; How to solve personal problems; How
to spend leisure time.

A well written manual is authoritative, factual, and helpful. It
should be written in simple, easily understood language.

It can be anything from a brief two-page photocopied report to a
professionally printed book bound in a hardback cover.

People who purchase manuals by mail are interested in the
information they contain. Seldom do they care what brand of
paper the information is printed on.

What kinds of manuals are now being sold by mail?

Pick up almost any magazine at a news stand that carries
classified advertising and you will find ads written by people
who are selling their manuals by mail.

Here are sample ads from magazines lying on the desk.

“Be secure, confident, successful! Learn the secret of personal
power. $2.00″

“Why grow old and die? Li Chung Yun lived 256 years. You could
too”.

“Peterborough Area Job Opportunities $2.00″

“Ship in Bottle. Instructions. Drawings. $3.00″

If you can produce a “How To” manual that is novel, interesting
and genuinely helpful, you can do what the advertisers above
have done. You can print it yourself and sell it by mail!

What should you write about?

You should write:

* only on subjects that really interest you, and * on subjects
that you already know something about.

For example, if you just love to cook, write a manual on cooking.

If people like the first manual they buy from you, they will buy
other manuals in the future, as long as they are on the same
basic subject.

If you write on a subject that really does not interest you very
much, you will be bored to death by the time you get to your
third manual.

Ask yourself – what do I do with my spare time? Write a manual
about that!

How do you research the manual?

Make yourself an expert on the subject!

Talk to friends and neighbors. Ask questions. Read books,
newspapers, and magazines on the subject. Ask your librarian for
suggestions. As you read, keep notes on everything. When you
have read everything you could lay your hands on, sit down and
study your notes. Read them over slowly and carefully. Then lay
the notes aside and think about the whole subject for a day or
two. You will be amazed at what your mind will do with the
subject if you have researched it thoroughly. How do you write
it?

Here is a tip from a professional writer.

Sit down and pretend that you are a person who knows absolutely
nothing about the subject.

Write down fifteen questions that such a person might ask you.
Then write out, in your own words, the answers to the fifteen
questions.

Do not try to be literary!

When you are finished, lay it aside for a day or two. Then
re-read it with a red pencil, crossing out all unnecessary words
and sentences, inserting a new point here and there.

Rewrite the whole thing, and you will be amazed to discover that
your manual is ready to be published!

How do you get it printed?

Type it as neatly as possible onto A4 white typing paper. Single
space it, leaving two lines between each paragraph.

Take it to a local copy/print shop, who will make you however
many copies of it, very reasonably, within 24 hours usually.

If you have more than four pages, have it printed on both sides
of the paper. It will lower your printing costs slightly, and
save you extra postage in the future.

To give your manual a professional touch, have it printed on
canary yellow, pink, or light green paper.

How do you sell it?

1. Direct from ads in magazines and tabloid papers.

If economically possible, sell it for $2.00 or $3.00 per copy.
Write a brief, eye catching classified ad, asking those
interested to send their orders directly to you.

If your ad is novel, believable, and of genuine interest, you
will be surprised at how many people will do this.

If your manual is about stamp collecting, advertise it in the
stamp collecting papers.

If it is about astrology, advertise it in the Astrology
magazines- to do otherwise is fatal.

Be sure to run your ad in at least three issues. If you have
never sold manuals by mail, I sincerely suggest you use this
method.

2. Advertise for Inquiries.

If your manual is quite elaborate, and must be sold for $5.00 or
more, use this method. Write a brief, tempting ad describing
your manual, and offer free details. Then mail literature
describing the manual to those who answer the ads. Don’t expect
more than one enquiry in ten to buy it from you.

Here are recent ads placed by manual writers who use this method:

“Never Won Anything? Anyone can win sweepstakes contests! Free
details”.

“Troubled? God can help! Free information.”

“Overweight? I lost 53 pounds. Easily – Permanently. New Method.
Information Free”.

“Make money clipping newspapers at home in spare time. Details
free.”

3. Direct Mail.

If you have written a manual showing how to get your inventions
patented, you could purchase a list of amateur inventors, and
mail your sales literature to each individual on the list.

If you are lucky, you’ll sell your manual to about one person in
every twenty-five.

Direct mail can be very effective for experienced mail order
operators, but it is usually far too costly for the beginner.

It can easily cost you over two hundred and fifty dollars for
each one thousand letters you mail.

4. Selling through agents.

If you are willing to sell your manual in small wholesale
quantities, or if you are willing to drop ship manuals for mail
dealers, then you might find this the most effective way to
market your manuals.

Below are some ads placed by manual writers.

“Sell Health Books Mail Order! Write”

“Sell Books By Mail. Complete Dealer Set Up $2.00″

“Sell Books by Mail! 400% Profit”

“Free Newsletter! Sell Books by Mail. We wholesale/dropship”

Some of the above ads have been running for over ten years,
indicating that this could be a very successful way to market
your manuals.

Good Luck

Why Vocational and Career Education Are Important

There are three major reasons why every school district should offer strong vocational learning opportunities:

1. Vocational competence is critical to the economic health of our nation.

2. A significant number of students, both college-bound and non-college-bound, are experiential learners who will learn academic skills best from developing them in a career or application context.

3. Delaying the career or application context until after grade 12 lowers motivation and learning achievement for many experiential learners.

Consider these characteristics of experiential learners:

1. They are often as or even more capable of complex learning than traditional learners.

2. They learn academic…

Why Vocational and Career Education Are Important

2. They learn academic skills best from concrete tasks and a focus on real-life problems.

3. They often do not work to their potential in the relatively abstract-linear environment of traditional classes.

So, not having vocational or career learning options is a major disservice to the many experiential learners in any school population.

Advantages of Career and Vocational Education

When strong vocational learning options are available in a school district, they present these advantages:

1. They help many experiential learners reach higher achievement levels. (Too few policymakers have given adequate attention to a major weakness of American public education – - lack of inclusion of a strong application component in learning programs. Refer to the work of Dr. William Daggett, president of the International Center for Leadership in Education, for solid research comparisons in this area. The Center’s web site is www.LeaderEd.com.)

2. Career path exploration helps many students make more information and dedicated choices on college enrollment. Students often discover the career path they love and are more motivated to pursue college study.

3. Career context makes subjects and courses more meaningful to students. Application adds to the strength of learning.

4. The career context makes it more feasible to teach and promote a continuous improvement culture in relation to the real world of work.

5. Strong secondary school vocational programs provide workplace skills to some students who do not plan to attend college immediately after graduation from high school. They also equip many college-bound students with skills useful in part-time work that helps in financing college study.

Evaluating Your Local Situation

Do you want to evaluate the strength of your local vocational and career options for students? Look for positive responses to these standards:

1. The local school mission statement recognizes career/vocational education as a valuable service to many college-bound and non-college-bound students.

2. The career focus is placed on all levels of the K-12 programs – -

a. Elementary schools using career-focused stories, readings, field trips.

b. Middle schools providing strong technical (applied) literacy learning opportunities, especially to encourage continued interest in science. Also, providing after-school career exploration options perhaps with the help of local or area vocational centers.

c. High schools providing a broad spectrum of both career exploration and initial skill development on different career paths. NOTE: The number of vocational programs should be adequate to serve students with different talents and interests. There should be technical or science-focused programs, people-focused programs, and traditional trade programs.

d. High school guidance providing help on preference matching between talents and careers.

e. High school vocational programs presenting beneficial articulation with both 2-year and 4-year college programs to reject completely the error of viewing vocational courses as something only for the non-college-bound. That latter stereotype was founded on ignorance of the value of different talent or intelligence areas.

f. High schools providing strong information on and articulated access to apprentice training programs as a viable and important option for graduation.

3. Fiscal support and facilities are maintained on modern and attractive levels for both classical and vocational programs, never allowing one area to play second-fiddle to the other.

4. Local educators and government leaders are working to correct any state and national inattention to the needs and talents of experiential and vocational learners. NOTE: That inattention is evidenced by over-emphasis on written high stakes tests and concurrent outright failure to provide performance evaluation options for highly talented experiential learners under initial implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act. Reasons given for this serious failure are nothing but outright rationalizations to provide excuses for avoiding the work of constructing comprehensive assessment programs. Narrow written tests alone are an “easier” even though cognitively weak option. Can you imagine riding in an airplane with a pilot who has passed a written test but never before actually successfully flown an airplane? At some point in the future a higher quality assessment program must be pursued for the good of students and the good of our nation.

5. Local educators and government leaders work actively to ensure three other realities for quality vocational programs:

a. Secondary vocational programs being protected against misuse such as referral of a disproportionate share of learning disadvantaged students (who often need more effective basic academic programs) or misbehaving students (who can be dangerous to themselves and others in shop situations). NOTE: The mission of vocational schools involves career path selection and preparation. They are not special education schools but, like all schools, can serve their share of special education students. If over-used for the special education purpose, the primary mission is subverted and many talented experiential learners are tragically excluded.

b. Business and industry representatives being kept deeply involved as advisors to and evaluators of all secondary vocational programs. NOTE: This is the path to keeping programs relevant to evolving careers and to having businesses provide special help (internships, equipment, etc.) to an important source of future employees.

c. Secondary vocational programs being given strong annual funding for modernization of teaching youngsters to use equipment no longer used in the real world of work.

If the response to any one of the above basic standards is negative, you have identified an area where corrective action should be taken.

Here is an honest look at what the benefits and drawbacks are of software that helps check your English spelling, grammar and offers suggestions for text improvement.

Cons

It may not pick up all English mistakes made; words spelled correctly but simply misused (such as using the word ‘bear’ instead of ‘beer’) may not always be caught by the program. Some suggested word alternatives may be out of context and unless you are familiar with the meaning of a word you may end up choosing an unsuitable synonym from the program’s suggested list. Relying solely on a program for proofreading and improving your English may foster a complacency towards improving your English.

Pros

They can save you time by giving your text a very quick once over and immediately highlighting typos or grammar and punctuation mistakes. By making suggestions for alternative words to use you can expand your vocabulary and enhance your writing. Some programs can be an English learning tool as they provide you with explanations when they correct your grammar, punctuation and spelling. Some programs offer templates, which provide you with a quick guide for structuring your writing.

Concluding advice

An English checking software package like this correct English tool will offer a lot of advantages to someone already acquainted with the basics of English spelling and grammar. Offering valuable tools like spelling and grammar checking and suggestions to improve sentences, these English checking programs can improve the quality of your English writing. However, new students of English would benefit from having a fluent English speaker proofread their writing in addition to using an English checking program.

Fresher: Find your first job

April & May, the months where students come out fresh from Colleges and Universities, few may have already planned for further studies but most of them would aim to find a job and start their career. For all those fresher who want the career to kick start, first and foremost you have to prepare a winning CV/Resume that helps you get the interview call. The next stage is to perform well in your interview that will get your first job. All Fresher should remember to be a successful candidate you have to work hard and be committed in your work, which will take you to heights in your career.

Prepare a CV/Resume

First & foremost, you must prepare a CV/Resume. A curriculum vitae or CV is a short document that describes your personal details, key skills and experience. It is very important that you describe yourself in a positive way and the CV should match the job description. Don’t wait for your results to be announced to prepare your CV; you always can mention in the CV that you are waiting for your results. Get advice from your seniors, working professionals and you can search on the internet to prepare a great CV that earns you an interview call. Make sure that after you have prepared the CV, send it across to your friends and family who can give valuable comments on the CV. Once you feel confident that your CV looks good then start to apply for jobs.

Where to find your Job?

You should know where to look for your jobs. Vacancies can be found in,
-Your College and University Placement Office notice boards.
-Newspapers (Most of them advertise on Wednesdays and Sundays weekly)
-Job search websites e.g. someone like us www.chennaijobsite.com
-Job consultancies/Recruitment agencies
-Company websites

Applying for a Job

Companies have different ways to apply for jobs.
Covering letter & CV
When companies ask to send a CV, you will be asked to send a covering letter as well. It is always better to send a covering letter with the CV, as this can used as a tool to impress the HR personnel apart from the CV. Your covering letter should include the following:
-Job reference id or Job Title
-A clear cut explanation on how you fit the Job role and the contribution you can offer in achieving the company’s’ goals
-Ensure that the document is spell and grammar checked before you send it to the company.
Application/Online forms
Companies may also ask to fill up an application form either may be paper application or an online form. When you fill up these forms, please make sure that you read and understand the instructions on the form. If you have any doubts please feel free to get clarified. Do not send an incomplete form as the chances are high that your application may be unsuccessful. The form will have a separate section where you have to describe on how well your suit the job description. This is the most important section in the application form that will earn or reject an interview call.

Key skills

Highlighting the key skills and co-relating them to the job role will be the key to the success of your application. You must demonstrate that you have
*Excellent communication skills
*Good working relationships
*Ability to work in a team
*Computer literacy

Interview Call

If your application is successful i.e. the HR personnel of the company is impressed either with your CV or your application, you will be invited for an Interview. This is an opportunity for you to communicate directly and a chance for the company to asses whether you are suitable for the job.
You will end up with your first job after you have successfully managed the whole process.

Wishing you all the very best for your Job search!

Because of their strong emotional connection to the world they are drawn to helping others and making the world we live in a better place. To understand why the creative culture gets involved with certain causes, here are five key reasons that drive their passions.

Raising Visibility
Many musicians support a cause because they want to elevate awareness in society. Bono is one of the best examples of this. AIDS awareness and prevention in Africa is a major issue, but does not always take center-stage in developed nations. Bono spends a lot of his time sponsoring AIDS awareness with (RED). Through various concerts and speaking engagements Bono works with (RED) to raise awareness and educate the developed world on the prevalence of AIDS in third world nations.

Sharing Values
Through profound personal experiences, some musicians are inspired to reach out and spread awareness. These musicians are often cancer survivors or recovering addicts. Melissa Etheridge is a great example of a musician that has reached out to support breast cancer awareness after surviving the disease. From performing at Hard Rock’s Pinktober Breast Cancer Awareness event to writing the song “Run for Life” for the Race for the Cure event, Etheridge is constantly promoting breast cancer research and awareness.

Educate
Sometimes, the general public are not informed of the cause or ways to volunteer. The Barenaked Ladies are constantly working with groups to increase awareness and educate their audiences. One organization they are currently working with is ABC CANADA–a private-sector group that tries promote adult literacy in Canada. They recently teamed up with Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and created the “If I had a Million Flavours” ice cream that helps raise awareness and the proceeds go to ABC CANADA.
