Myths and Realities About India
Myths and Misconceptions about India abound.
While illiteracy and poverty are the disturbing reality, there is hope for India because of the economic opportunities for the young and a thriving democracy. In the recent past, several old myths about India have been shattered. Change and optimism is in the air as India has emerged as one of the fastest growing global economies.
However, questions and concerns still remain. Many believe India is unusually hot, stuck in a time warp with high levels of social unrest and religious intolerance. But what is the ground situation? How much of this is true? What is the kind of cultural diversity? Is it really filthy and dirty? Do women live in ‘purdah’? Is it all about cheap labor? What is the level of intellectual capabilities? Is it blind faith or religious fanaticism? Can all Indians speak English? Are inequities on the rise?

Though certain myths still remain true, there are lot of changes that have been happening in India in the past few decades.
India is still a dirty country with overflowing garbage that is scavenged, breakdown of sewers, spit stained walls, stench of urine is very common. But with the coming of planned communities and increased investments in infrastructure, there have been efforts to do something about these issues.
It is tough to do business due to lengthy government procedures and rampant corruption. But with the opening of the Indian economy and the flowing of foreign investments, the government has relaxed a lot of procedures, facilitating investments. Corruption though remains a big problem.
Women do not have a voice in India and are subjugated by the menfolk. Though this scenario is changing with stronger presence in higher positions in the Indian workforce, majority of Indian women juggle looking after the home and supplementing the man’s income through employment.
As against this, India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, with a well established industrial sector and a huge growing middle class, with many economic opportunities for the young.
