The person has basic reading skills, graduated college and all BUT has a very hard time with larger words. I am wanting to help, and the person wants my help, but i need to know of a way to do so effectively without making the person feel badly. It amazes me how the education system does not spot such problems..

I recommend movies with close caption. Books that are interesting and related to topics the person finds interesting. Make him read short perios (15 minutes), then have him wrtie a short composition about the book he was reading. Show him what kind of sentences he is using, and compare them to the gramatical structure of the book.
It depends on their level of reading troubles. If severe enough start with the basics of all words. The as they progress get more vocabular with the larger words.
