I know this, compare the No Child Left Behind statistics between math and reading. We see good, strong improvement in math, but reading (even though the numbers have slightly increased) has remained largely stagnant.
What to do about it? I don’t like our current policies in place. 1) Forced reading for 20 minutes a day. 2) Emphasis on reading textbooks in every class. I wish there was a way we could do this from the home. It’s a more effective solution. Turn off the TVs and video games and focus on literary reading. But we can’t do that, so we will continue to flounder. It’s also one of those situation where elementary school is everything. Once the student falls behind at ages 5, 6, 7, and 8, that student has a long road to recover.
