Where did you find the 51st in literacy number? Wikipedia has a list that has the USA ranked 17th (tied with a number of countries at 99% literacy). 99% literacy sounds pretty good to me.
The wikipedia entry references the UN document on the subject. The book of lists is the trash source in this case.
Shows how great the public education is. Children is not the responsibility of the government. It is only the responsibility of the parents. Period.
There is no correlation between the two.
I can see the public education system failed you if you made that correlation.
No. Who needs to read? Let the priests tell them what the bible really says, and do not teach them to read so that they can read for themselves and think for themselves.
